Guard Your Spiritual Heart

You really have to be careful about what you listen to and watch and what you allow your children to listen to and watch. Satan uses entertainment, including movies, tv shows, music, social media, and all other forms of media to keep us away from God. He uses it to keep our minds on sinful activities, fear, and to just take up our time. What we allow for our eyes to see and our ears to hear gets into the heart of our souls and shapes our thinking and beliefs. Some things we consider entertainment are just plain toxic and demonic, but they are so socially acceptable, no one really notices. That’s why you need to stay reading the Word of God, the Holy Bible, spending time with God, and allowing His Holy Spirit to guide you.

The wages of sin are death.  You become spiritually what you feed on, meaning what you watch and listen to.  People think it’s just entertainment, but its influence is powerful because it gets into your subconscious mind and soul and becomes a part of you.  In history, world leaders and people of influence have used media to influence people’s beliefs and to brainwash them. It’s still being done today. You can see how media and entertainment are being used to indoctrinate young and old to accept the new social norms that are obviously unbiblical and are an abomination to God.  It’s in children’s programming and in tv shows and movies created for adults to watch.

I encourage you to be more selective and prayerful about how you spend your time.  Pay attention to the messages they are trying to convey.   Screen what your kids watch and teach them what’s right and wrong about what you allow them to watch. Start teaching them early about the Word according to their age. God has given us His Word so we won’t be deceived by the world and the world’s ways. Take time to study it and pray to God for understanding and revelation of how to apply it in your life. God’s Word is life. Choose life.

Are You Placing Culture Over God?

Don’t be distracted and deceived by the culture of this world. We live in a fallen world influenced by Satan. The bible calls him the god of this world. He hates anything that has to do with God, including all mankind. He uses music, movies, and false religions to deceive and distract people from the truth of Jesus. Don’t be deceived. Jesus is the truth, the way, and the life. No one will enter the Kingdom of Heaven without him. He is the Word. In order to love Jesus, you must read his Word (the Bible) and keep His commandments. Jesus is the only way to be reconciled to the Father. No man can come to the Father without Jesus.

Don’t let the busyness of life and entertainment keep you from developing a relationship with God. As you develop your relationship with God, he will open your understanding and change your desires for things that please Him.  Don’t wait to give your life to God. After death, it’s too late. This life is so temporary. Don’t trade eternity with God in Heaven for the pleasures and comforts of this temporary life and be thrown in the lake of fire for eternity with absolutely no hope of redemption. God is love and full of grace and mercy, but he is also a God of judgment. The time for grace in everyone’s life will expire. You will either be saved by the blood of Jesus and be exonerated of your sins, or you will pay for your own sins in the lake of fire for eternity. It’s your choice, and your choice alone. No one can make it for you, and no one can pray you out of Hell. Choose this day, this hour, this minute, who you will serve.

Romans 10:9 NIV
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

2 Corinthians 4:4 NIV
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

John 14:6 NIV
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Matthew 16:24-27 NIV
[24] Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. [25] For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. [26] What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? [27] For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

John 14:15-17 NIV
[15]  “If you love me, keep my commands. [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— [17] the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Revelation 20:12,15 NIV
[12] And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. [15] Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Are You Living in God’s Love?

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” is probably the most well known verse in the bible. God loves the sinner so much that Jesus died for us while we were still sinners. But when we give our lives to God through Jesus Christ, we must learn to live in God’s love. To love God is to keep his commandments. Jesus is our example. In John 10:17 NIV, Jesus stated that “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again.”  Jesus was obedient to the Father even unto a horrible and humilating death by crucifixion on the cross. Obedience is better than sacrifice.  Many of us are not called to die for our faith, especially in the United States, but everyone is called to be obedient to God.

The first step is to genuinely repent of your sins and make Jesus Lord and Savior over your life.  The next step is reading your Bible regularly to learn about God’s ways and how He expects us to live. The Bible is clear.  When we obey God, we live in His love.

Don’t get it twisted. We can’t earn God’s love or salvation. It is a free gift from God. Again, John 3:16 states that God so loved the world that He gave. God gave His son Jesus because God loves the sinner. He wants you to come as you are, but he doesn’t expect you to stay as you are. He wants you to let Him change you. That process includes learning to love God and learning to keep His commandments because you must learn to love God of your own free will. Only those whose hearts are truly for God will inherit eternal life in Heaven.

John 14:15 NIV
“If you love me, keep my commands.

1 John 5:3 NIV
In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,

1 Corinthians 2:9 NIV
However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love him—

John 15:9-10 NIV
[9] “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. [10] If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

Romans 8:28 NIV
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

How to Have Faith

People seem to think that they will have faith in God if they see a miracle. But faith is cultivated through our relationship with God. Part of that relationship is reading and studying His Word, the Holy Bible. The Apostle Paul teaches in Romans 10:17 KJV,”So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Whatever you hear all the time, you will believe whether it’s true or not. That is why we must be careful of what we allow ourselves to feed on, such as the news, social media, gossip, etc.  That’s why propaganda is so powerful. We see it in history and every election cycle.

Our faith should be based solely on the Word of God. Miracles are just a confirmation of God’s Word, not the source of faith. We see in the Bible that people didn’t have faith in God because of miracles.  The children of Israel had to wonder the wilderness for forty years because they didn’t believe God’s promise to give them the land He promised them after seeing many miracles of deliverance and provision. The Jewish religious leaders didn’t believe Jesus was the Messiah, although he did many miracles. They viewed Him as a threat and had him crucified.

Faith can only come by reading the Word and truly believing it in your heart. Once you believe it in your heart, you will look at everything through the lens of the Word. The Word opens your spiritual understanding of the world. It gives you wisdom and understanding of the spiritual things of God. It gives you discernment of the evil in our world and how to fight it spiritually. It takes faith to have a relationship with God and to trust Him and His Word. God does sometimes choose to confirm His Word through miracles. God has given true believers the power through the name of Jesus to perform miracles to reach the lost and provide the needs of the believer, but they can’t be the foundation of faith. Only the Word of God is the foundation of faith.

Hebrews 12:2 KJV
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Mark 16:17-18 KJV
[17] And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; [18] They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

God Uses Rejection – Don’t Despise the Process

God uses rejection to lead you into your purpose.  The Bible teaches that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor are His ways our ways. (Isaiah 55:8)  We interpret rejection as something to be avoided because it causes us pain, but God uses rejection to lead us into the purpose He has for us. This world can not, and for the most part, will not see or accept the truth of God and His Word. Therefore, we as Christians who are walking in the true light of the Word will be rejected as Jesus was rejected by His people.  Jesus would not have been able to fulfill His purpose of dying on the cross to pay for our sins without the rejection of His people.

Another example is Joseph, the son of Jacob. Joseph would not have been able to fulfill his purpose if his jealous brothers did not throw him in the pit and sell him into slavery. If Joseph had not been rejected by his brothers, he would not have been able to become the prime minister of Egypt, second only to Pharoah, to save the lives of many including his brothers and their families during a sever drought.

Rejection is painful, but there is always a purpose, even if it is just to draw us closer to God. This world is perishing quickly. The only thing that can save you is a true relationship with God. It’s in the lonely times that God uses to prepare and equip us to do His will. I encourage you to press through and trust God through the process. Let His will be done in your life. He will comfort and guide you and place the right people in your life. It’s hard, but it’s more than worth it.

Seek salvation through Jesus while you can:

Romans 10:9 NIV
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Isaiah 55:6-8 NIV
[6] Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. [7] Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. [8] “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.

God has a purpose for everyone:

Jeremiah 1:5 NIV
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Satan has deceived the world to reject the gospel of Jesus:

2 Corinthians 4:4 NIV
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

1 Corinthians 1:18-19 NIV
[18] For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. [19] For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

We, as true disciples of Jesus, will be rejected:

John 15:18-20 NIV
[18] “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. [19] If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. [20] Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

Jesus warns us that we will have trouble in the world, but we overcome it by our faith in Him:

John 16:33 NIV
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

1 John 5:3-5 NIV
[3] In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, [4] for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. [5] Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Those who overcome the world through Jesus will inherit eternal life:

Revelation 21:7 NIV
Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.

What God Has to Say About Sex

Sexual immorality is a big deal to God because our bodies are the temple of God. We think of temples as buildings where we gather to worship, but God has made our bodies to be temples for His Holy Spirit to inhabit. Therefore, God has set strict guidelines of what is acceptable sexual behavior. To start with the basics, in the beginning, God created male and female. God ordained marriage to join a man with a woman for a lifelong commitment. Any sex beyond this is immoral and sin in the eyes of God. If you are in an immoral relationship, I encourage you to repent. Some of you should get married others should separate.  You need to pray and seek God of how you should move forward. If the other person doesn’t support your decision to get things right with God, then you have your answer.  The Bible teaches for us not to be unequally yoked, meaning that a believer should not marry an unbeliever.  As to all non-biblical relationships, I encourage you to seek God for deliverance. For those who say that is Old Testament, read Romans 1:26-27 (see below).  God didn’t change His mind about it being an abomination.

God created our bodies, and He has the right to decide what is sinful and what is not. The marriage bed (male with female) is undefiled. Repent and stop sinning that includes watching porn and having sex with yourself. Get it right with God while you still can.  Ask Him to help you.  Time is short! Jesus is coming back soon. We will all have to answer to Him for what we have done. Don’t burn in Hell for eternity just to satisfy your lust.  This life is temporary. Eternity is not.

Scripture References

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 NIV
[18] Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. [19] Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; [20] you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:13 NIV
You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

2 Timothy 2:22 KJV
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Ephesians 5:31 NIV
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

Hebrews 13:4 NIV
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

Revelation 21:8 NIV
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

2 Corinthians 6:14 NIV
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

Romans 1:26-27 NIV
[26] Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. [27] In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

Leviticus 18:22 NIV
“ ‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

Leviticus 18:22 KJV
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV
[22] You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; [23] to be made new in the attitude of your minds; [24] and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Note:  The King James Version uses the word fornication for sexual immorality.

Do you have a real relationship with God or do you just have religion?

There are many people who go to church, but they have no personal relationship with God. Some of them even know some scripture. It seems that people want to do Christianity and church without God.  They just want to pick and choose what they like in the bible and base their set of beliefs around their preferences and add some church traditions to go with it. They believe they can have Christianity their way, like Burger King.

Then there are some true Christians that only want God in a very limited way. They love the traditions of the Church but God is not invited at all to move how he may want to move. If anyone starts feeling God’s presence and starts to express it that person is promptly corrected or asked to leave.

We shouldn’t be surprised of these things. In the Apostle Paul’s letter to Timothy, he teaches us that people will have a form of godliness but deny the power of God in 2 Timothy 3:5 KJVS.  He says:

“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

Some people want just enough God to make them feel good about themselves. They want to continue to live the lifestyle they want and they don’t want God to upset their program. The Apostle Paul warns us to turn away from such people.

If a relationship with God is not your motivation to identify yourself as a “Christian,” then you are not a Christian at all. First and foremost, you have to accept Christ Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

The Apostle Paul explains how to be saved in Romans 10:9-10 KJVS.

[9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

[10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

After you make this confession, you must seek a relationship with God. This is not just a one-time deal where you say a prayer and bam. you’re saved for life no matter how you live. I know some people believe that, but there is no scriptural basis to support that belief. The bible from Gensis to Revelation is about God trying to get people to seek a relationship with him. God did the hard work by sending Jesus to pay for the sins of mankind. Our job is to accept Jesus and make him not just Savior but Lord. Lord means you give up trying to live your life like you want instead you spend time reading and studying the bible and spend time with God to find out how he wants you to live and the purpose he has for your life. You will find that the bible reveals the heart of God for mankind. If you are newly saved, I recommend you read the Gospel of John in the New Testament first.

Remember our “good works” can’t get us in heaven. The only admission ticket to heaven is your relationship with God but just like any relationship we change over time as we grow in our relationship with God because we develop a desire to please him.

We can’t claim to be a Christian or just do church without God. He must be the reason and motivation.

We also can’t just put him in a box in Church or in our lives. We just can’t just give God a little bit of ourselves and a little bit of our church services. It’s all or nothing.  Jesus told the church of the Laodiceans in Revelation 3:15-16 NKJV:

[15] I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.

[16] So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

The KJV Life Application Study Bible gives some background information and a great explanation of these verses.

“3:15 Laodicea was the wealthiest of the seven cities, known for its banking industry, its manufacture of wool, and a medical school that produced eye ointment. But the city had always had a problem with its water supply. At one time an aqueduct was built to bring water to the city from hot springs. But by the time the water reached the city, it was neither hot nor refreshingly cool—only lukewarm. Lukewarm water makes a disgusting drink.”

“3-16 The church in Laodicea had become lukewarm in faith and thus distasteful and repugnant. The believers didn’t take a stand for anything; apathy and indifference had led to idleness. By neglecting to do anything for Christ, the church had become hard-hearted and self-satisfied. It was destroying itself. God won’t use an apathetic, self-sufficient, nominal Christian. Don’t settle for following God halfway. Let Christ fire up your faith and get you into the action.”

Jesus is saying he is not pleased with people who just have enough religion to make them feel good. He wants people who are on fire for him.

We all know it’s hard to witness to people who know something about Jesus and know some bible scripture who go to church occasionally but have no real relationship with God. This is why Jesus said he wished you were either hot or cold.  A cold person who doesn’t know about Jesus or have religion is a lot easier to bring into a relationship with God because they can see their need for him. A religious lukewarm person becomes dependent on religious traditions and their own Christian beliefs that they have chosen to incorporate in their lives while discarding other parts of the Christian faith the bible teaches. It’s dangerous to hang around people like that because you open yourself to compromise. If you’re not careful, you will adopt some of their behaviors and beliefs and become just as watered down and lukewarm as them.  That is why the Apostle Paul warned Timothy to stay away from such people.

In James 4:4, the Apostle James gives us a stern warning.  He says;

James 4:4 KJVS
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

The Passion Translation gives a wonderful and clear translation of this verse. It says:

James 4:4 TPT
You have become spiritual adulterers who are having an affair, an unholy relationship with the world. Don’t you know that flirting with the world’s values places you at odds with God? Whoever chooses to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy!

We compromise our salvation when we start accepting the world’s values that are prohibited by God in his Word in our lives and in our churches.  We become God’s enemy when we allow these things. There is no such thing as Christianity your way because of God’s grace.

God will not be mocked.  He will not allow his grace to be abused. Grace gives us the power to live a life pleasing to God. It’s not a license to do you and live like you want to in a way that is contrary to God’s Word and believe that you are good with God because you said the sinner’s prayer.

The sinner’s prayer is just the introduction and the invocation to a lifelong relationship with God, just like a marriage proposal is just the first step in starting a lifelong marriage. No man with integrity will ask a woman to marry him without the intention to stay committed and faithful to her for a lifetime and no woman with integrity would accept the proposal for marriage without the intention to stay committed and faithful to him for a lifetime. God expects no less. He expects a lifelong commitment and faithfulness when you say the sinner’s prayer for salvation. He also expects you to daily learn of him to learn his ways and what he expects from you, just like you learn these things from your spouse after you get married. You start to learn daily, more things about your spouse and what each person expects from the other. It’s like that with God also.

Don’t allow yourself to have a false sense of security. God is a holy God. God is love, but he is also a God of judgment. No person will be saved unless it’s by the blood of Jesus. The blood of Jesus will only cover those who are truly repented and sincerely want a relationship with him. Grace without repentance and turning away from sin will not save you. You must turn from sin, and when you do sin, repent immediately. No one is perfect, but God has made a way to be forgiven as we choose to walk through life with him.  Jesus said in Luke 9:23-26 KJVS:

[23] …If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

[24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

[25] For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

[26] For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

Jesus is saying in this passage that we must deny ourselves daily and live how God wants us to live.  Jesus is not talking about actually losing our life by dying. He is talking about giving up our desire to live like we want in order to live for God.  If we decide to live like we want without God, we will be condemned to an eternity in Hell, but if we live our life with and for God, we will enjoy an eternity with him in Heaven. It doesn’t do any good to gain fame and richest in this life just to suffer an eternity in Hell. If you are ashamed to identify yourself as a Christian believer, Jesus will be ashamed of you in the presence of God the Father and the Holy angels.

The bible is clear. God is not pleased with watered down lukewarm Christians. If you want to be a follower of Christ you must take up your cross daily by choosing to do God’s will daily, reading and studying the bible, and spending time with him. This is the only way to eternal life. The first step is accepting Jesus as Savior and Lord.

The Importance of Prayer

The scripture that inspired this study is the second part of James 5:16.

The KJV states: “…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

The AMPC translation states: “…The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].”

The TPT translations the verse to state: “…tremendous power is released through the passionate, heartfelt prayer of a godly believer!”

This verse is teaching us that prayers need to be earnest, sincere, passionate, and heartfelt. Prayers like these that are prayed by a righteous person are effective and powerful. They have the potential to produce powerful results if the prayer is within God’s will. In this study we are going to discuss:

  • The Importance of Praying in Faith
  • Hindrances From Answered Prayer
  • The Importance of Persistent Prayer
  • The Power of Praying in the Spirit

The Importance of Praying in Faith

The bible has a lot to say about prayer. Praying in faith is very powerful. Prayer is simply communicating our request to God. All through out the bible people prayed to God. Our prayer time is a very important part of our relationship with God. God wants us to spend time with him in prayer. The Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 5:7 admonishes us to cast all our anxiety on him because he cares for us. God wants us to make all our requests to him in faith. The Apostle Paul teaches us this in Philippians 4:6-7 NIV:

[6] Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

[7] And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

In this passage we are instructed not to be anxious about the worries of life but to bring our requests to God with a thankful heart for everything he has already done. When we do that in faith God will give us peace that is beyond understanding. We don’t have to understand how God is going to work things out in order for us to be in peace because our faith is in God and in his sovereignty to work things out according to his will. We know God works everything out for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) Our job is to have faith in God not in our requests. I don’t know about you but there are some prayers I prayed that I am glad God did not grant. I want God to work things out according to his will not mine. His will is always best. When we pray we must pray in faith in order for it to be effective. The Apostle James teaches us this in James 1:6-8 NIV. He says:

[6] But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

[7] That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

[8] Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

There is no need to go to God about something if you don’t have faith that he will work it out. God responds to faith. Hebrews 11:6 KJVS says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” This verse teaches us that God rewards those who continually seek him in faith. Let’s take a moment to examine what is faith. Hebrews 11:1 NIV describes faith as the “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” The following is the KJV Life Application Study Bible explanation of that verse:

“11:1 Faith starts with believing in God’s goodness and truth—that he is who he says he is. Faith culminates with knowing that God will do what he promises. When we believe that he will fulfill his promises even though we don’t see them materializing yet, we demonstrate true faith (see John 20:24-31).”

So how do we get faith. The Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 10:17 KJVS, that “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” This has always been a difficult verse for me to completely understand. But through my experience I have realized that it is not enough to just hear the Word of God, you have to have understanding and the revelation that can only come from the Holy Spirit. During Jesus ministry on Earth people heard but they had absolutely no understanding or revelation of what he was teaching. His disciples often asked Jesus for the meaning behind the parables he used to teach. It is impossible to develop faith without understanding God’s Word. We need the Holy Spirit to help us understand and get the revelation we need as we read and study the bible. The Apostle James admonishes us to ask God for wisdom in James 1:5 NIV. He says: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” This verse not only applies to asking for wisdom for situations it also applies to asking God for wisdom to understand and apply the Word of God in our lives. This is how faith is birth in us. This is the faith we need when we come to God in prayer. It’s not enough to have faith we must speak in faith. Hebrews 11:1 KJVS states that “…faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Our words give substance to faith. When we speak faith filled words we are planting seeds of faith. Jesus taught his disciples to speak to the mountain in Mark 11:23-24 KJVS. He said:

[23] For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

[24] Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

In this passage Jesus uses some form of the word say three times. He really emphasizes how powerful our words are. He is teaching us to speak to our own mountains which is whatever problem or situation that we are dealing with in our lives. I heard a saying, “tell your problem how big your God is instead of telling God how big the problem is.” This is so true. We release our faith when we speak faith. When we pray we must have faith, speak faith, and believe that we received what we prayed for at the time we prayed.

Hindrances From Answered Prayer

There are many hindrances to answered prayer. We already discussed the importance of having faith but the first thing you must do is ask. This is first and foremost because people can’t receive if they don’t ask. The Apostle James tells us this in James 4:2 KJVS, “…ye have not, because ye ask not.” In order to receive from God we first have to ask. How many times have we been working on something or pondering on what to do about a situation and become frustrated then realized we forgot to ask God. It’s easy to forget sometimes because we are relying on our own experiences and expertises. We should involve God in every aspect of our lives. We can’t receive the answers we need without first seeking him. The Apostle James goes on to say in James 4:3 KJVS, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” We have to be careful about our motives when we pray. Yes, God does care about our desires. I believe he not only wants to meet our needs, he also wants to give us the desires of our heart. As stated in Psalm 37:4 KJVS, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Notice the verse starts with delight thyself in the Lord. As we grow our relationship with God. Our desires change. We start to desire what he wants. We start seeking his will for our lives instead of ours. That’s when our prayers start to line up with God’s will not just our selfish desires. Please don’t get me wrong. God cares about every area of our lives. He wants us to come to him in prayer about everything but sometimes our desires don’t line up with his will. That’s why God doesn’t grant those prayers. The writer of Hebrews warns and encourages us in Hebrews 10:35-36 KJVS. He says:

[35] Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

[36] For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

I love the way the Passion Translation states those verses. It says: Hebrews 10:35-36 TPT

[35] So don’t lose your bold, courageous faith, for you are destined for a great reward!

[36] You need the strength of endurance to reveal the poetry of God’s will and then you receive the promise in full.

The writer of Hebrews teaches us that we will be rewarded after we have done the will of God. We need patience, strength, and endurance. These attributes are developed in us as we go through the situations of life. God never promised us an easy life as a Christian but he promised to never leave or forsake us. That’s why we can’t always pray our problems away. God allows them to develop us so he can work in us. When we give everything to God he will work everything out for our good as he promised through the Apostle Paul in Romans 8:28 KJVS, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” In order for us to claim that promise we must love God and seek his will for our lives. Another hindrance of answered pray is non-forgiveness. Jesus warns us in Mark 11:25-26 KJVS to forgive when we pray. The passage says:

[25] And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

[26] But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

In this passage Jesus is teaching us that we must forgive when we come in prayer in order for our prayers to be effective and for our sins to be forgiven. Unforgiveness stiffens faith because it is sin. It breaks the second greatest commandment Jesus gave us in Mark 12:30-31 KJVS. In this passage Jesus gives us the two greatest commandments. He says:

[30] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

[31] And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

We can’t say we love God and hate anyone. The Apostle John teaches us this in 1 John 4:20-21 KJVS.

[20] If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

[21] And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

The Apostle John is saying we can’t be right with God if we have hate in our hearts for someone. Hate is sin and sin separates us from God and kills our faith. We can’t expect God to honor our prayers if our hearts are not right with him. We must forgive each other in order for us to be right with God. Then we can come to him in prayer excepting an answer. The Apostle Peter teaches us in 1 Peter 3:12 KJVS, that “…the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.” If we expect our prayers to be answered, we must keep God’s commandments. The Apostle John teaches us this in 1 John 3:21-23 KJVS. He says:

[21] Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

[22] And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

[23] And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

The bible clearly teaches us that in order to keep our prayers from being hindered we must first ask, pray in faith, delight ourselves in the Lord, seek his will, forgive others, and keep God’s commandments.

The Importance of Persistent Prayer

The Apostle Paul admonishes us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJVS, to “Pray without ceasing.” We are to pray continually and persistently. Jesus taught two parables to illustrate this point. In Luke 11:5-10 KJVS, Jesus said to his disciples.

[5] …Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;

[6] For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?

[7] And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.

[8] I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

[9] And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

[10] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

In Luke 18:1-5 KJVS, Jesus shared another parable about persistent prayer.

[1] And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

[2] Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:

[3] And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.

[4] And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;

[5] Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

Jesus used these two parables to teach us to be persistent in our prayers. An actual example of persistent prayer that happened in Jesus’ earthly ministry is recorded in Matthew 15:21-28 KJVS.

[21] Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

[22] And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

[23] But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

[24] But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

[25] Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

[26] But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.

[27] And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.

[28] Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

This woman was not giving up. Jesus called this lady a dog but she persisted and received her miracle. Another example is recorded in Acts chapter 12. King Herod killed James the brother of John. When Herod saw it pleased the Jews he arrested Peter to be executed as well. He was thrown in prison and heavily guarded. The bible says in Acts 12:5 in the KJVS that “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.” The Passion Translation translates that verse by saying, “The church went into a season of intense intercession, asking God to free him.” The church prayed continuely and persistently for Peter to be released. Because of their prayers God sent an angel to free Peter from prison. Jesus himself taught us that we need to be persistent in our prayers. Praying for something is not always a one time event. Sometimes you have to be persistent to press in with faith. A delayed response is not always a no answer. We must use the time between praying and standing in faith to receiving the answer to develop our faith and seek God’s will. Our most important prayer in every situation is God let your will be done.

The Power of Praying in the Spirit

When we pray we must pray according to God’s will. We don’t always know what’s best for us. Our desires may not be what God wants for our lives. We must have confidence in God and pray that his will be done. Because we don’t know what to pray for God has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us. The Apostle Paul explains that in Romans 8:26-28 KJVS,

[26] Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

[27] And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

[28] And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

This is known as praying in the Spirit or praying in tongues. When we pray in this way the Holy Spirit is interceding for us according to the will of God. We do not understand the language but we are praying the perfect will of God because the prayer comes from the Holy Spirit. He provides the words as described in Acts 2:4 KJVS: “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” That’s how we know that all things will work out for our good because the Holy Spirit is praying the perfect will of God for our lives. What a powerful gift from God. Pentecostal Christians call this gift being baptized with the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul teaches us in 1 Corinthians 14:2 KJVS that we speak to God mysteries. He says: “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him ; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” We do not understand the language the Holy Spirit is speaking through us but God does. The Apostle Paul says we are actually talking to God mysteries. The Apostle Paul admonishes us to pray always in the Spirit in Ephesians 6:18 KJVS. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” This gift is available to all Christians but you have to seek God for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist stated in Luke 3:16 KJVS: “…I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:” He spoke of Jesus and the baptism of the Holy Spirit that would be given after Jesus’ resurrection from the dead on the day of Pentecost recorded in Acts chapter 2. The Apostle Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 KJVS to pray in the Spirit and in you understanding. He says:

[14] For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

[15] What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Praying in the Spirit is a powerful way to pray but it is not necessary. God will hear our prayers whether we pray in our own language in our own understanding or in the Spirit. The important thing is to pray about everything. God loves hearing from his children. He’s never too busy or unconcerned. He loves his children and is concerned about everything we are concerned about in our lives. Just bring everything to him and trust him to work everything out according to his will. Sometimes it won’t work out the way you thought, hoped, or prayed for but God’s will is always best.

Final thoughts, the keys to answered prayers are:

  • Seek the kingdom of God over all else
  • Pray according to the will of God. Let God’s will be done not ours.
  • Let God’s Word live in us.
  • Offer thanksgiving to God.
  • Ask God. He cares for us.
  • Do his commandments. Live a life of love and repentance.
  • Forgive others.
  • Be persistent and patient. God is working things out for our good. What we want isn’t always God’s will for our lives.
  • Stay in faith. Live a life of faith in God.

What It Means to be Born Again

Christianity is not a religion. It’s a personal relationship with Jesus. But I think the hardest people to witness to are people who already know about Jesus but don’t have a relationship with him. They believe Christianity is only a religion with a set of beliefs. They like the belief system, but they miss the point that Jesus died to pay for our sins so we could be saved and be reconciled to God the Father to become his sons and daughters. That’s what sets us apart from all the religions of the world. We who are born again have a personal relationship with our God through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We don’t have just a set of beliefs to guide our life, we have the living God who is our heavenly Father.

In this study we are going back to the basics of Christianity 101. The Apostle Peter admonishes us in 1 Peter 3:15 in NIV translation to “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

So in order to witness Christ we must study what the bible teaches to prepare ourselves to share our faith in Christ with others.

The following will be discussed in this study:

  • God’s Plan and Purpose for Redeeming Mankind
  • What it Means to be Born Again
  • What the Resurrection of Jesus Means to Us

God’s Plan and Purpose for Redeeming Mankind

The core of our Christian belief is the plan of redemption through the sacrifice of Jesus. When Adam disobeyed God, sin entered into the world. Sin separates us from God because sin is an abomination to him. The penalty of sin has to be paid. Just like when someone commits a crime they must serve their sentence. So man and God had a problem. It is not God’s will for anyone to be lost so he enacted a system in which man could offer blood sacrifices of perfect unblemished bulls, goats, lambs, or turtle doves. The book of Leviticus explains this elaborate system were the high priest were given sacrificial animals by the people so their sins would be covered. This was the Old Covenant system. But there was a problem, the sacrifices had to be done over and over again because the blood of animals cannot atone for mankind’s sins forever. Only the precious blood of God’s son Jesus could do that.

Hebrews 9:11-15 NLT, describes how the sacrifice of God’s son Jesus created a New Covenant between God and mankind.

[9] So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world.

[12] With his own blood-not the blood of goats and calves-he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.

[13] Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity.

[14] Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

[15] That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.

Hebrews 10:4 KJV, teaches us, “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.” This is why the sacrifice of the Jesus the sinless lamb of God was necessary. He paid the full price for sin.

2 Corinthians 5:21 KJVS
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Our sins are no longer covered they are wiped clean when we confess them and ask God for forgiveness in Jesus name.

Now we know Jesus paid the price for sin let’s look at why God would want to redeem mankind. To do that we must go back to the beginning when man was first created.

In Genesis 1:26 KJV, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…” When God said our image he was speaking of the trinity himself, Jesus who was known as the Word as described in the first chapter of the Gospel of John, and the Holy Spirit. Genesis 2:7 KJV describes how God created man. “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

God formed man in his own image and breathed life into him because he wanted a family. We don’t know what God looks like but we do know he is a spirit as stated in John 4:24. God breathed the spirit of life into Adam. In doing so God created him in his own image and gave him dominion over everything he created making mankind his greatest creation. But when Adam sinned he lost his close relationship with God and his authority in the Earth. But God had a plan before the sin of Adam was committed. In Revaluation 13:8 Jesus is described as the “Lamb that was slain before the foundation of the world.” God already knew Adam would sin so it was decided before the foundation of the world that Jesus, the Word, would come as a human to die for the sins of mankind. God loves mankind so much he gave his only sinless son as a ransom to redeem mankind. The Apostle John teaches us how God redeemed mankind in John 3:16-18 KJVS,

[16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

[17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

[18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Because of God’s great love for us he gave us a way to be reconciled to him so we can become his sons and daughters. All we have to do is to repent of our sins and confess Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

The Apostle Paul teaches us this in Romans 10:9 KJV, “if thou shall confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

What it Means to be Born Again

When we make Jesus our Lord and savior we became born again.

So what does it mean to be born again?

In John 3:1-6, Jesus teaches Nicodemus about being born again. The passage reads in the KJVS:

[1] There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

[2] The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

[3] Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

[4] Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

[5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

[6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Jesus is teaching Nicodemus in this passage that being born again is a spiritual rebirth. When Adam sinned he died a spiritual death. He was no longer connected to God like he was before he sinned. He could no longer fellowship with God as he did before. That spiritual separation from God has been passed down to all of us. That is why it is necessary for our spirits to be born again so we can enjoy fellowship with God. When we become born again, God gives us his Holy Spirit to live inside us. We become able to fellowship with God through his Holy Spirit. Not only that, God adopts us as his children. The Apostle Paul teaches us this in Romans 8:15-16 KJVS:

[15] For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

[16] The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

The bible clearly teaches we must be born again. Being born again is the rebirth of our spirits from the spiritual death handed down to us from Adam. It is the plan of God to bring us in fellowship with him and for us to be adopted as his children. What an awesome God! But this is not the end of the redemption plan. It gets even better.

What the Resurrection of Jesus Means to Us

Now that we know the redemption plan of God, his purpose for redeeming mankind, and what it means to be born again. Lets see what the bible has to say about what the resurrection of Jesus means to us.

Jesus death on the cross is not the end of the redemption plan. After three days Jesus rose from the dead.

Jesus defeated death, hell, and the grave.

In Revelation 1:18 KJVS Jesus declares, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

KJV Life Application Study Bible explains it like this:

“1:17-18 Our sins have convicted and sentenced us, but Jesus holds the keys of death and Hades. He alone can free us from eternal bondage to Satan. He alone has the power and authority to set us free from sin’s control. Believers don’t have to fear Hades or death. Instead, we must turn from sin and turn to him in faith. When we attempt to control our lives and disregard God, we set a course that leads directly to hell. But when we place our lives in Christ’s hands, he restores us now and will resurrect us later to an eternal, peaceful, and vibrant relationship with him.”

When God created man, he didn’t create man to die. God made the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden which is recorded in Genesis 2:9 KJV,

“And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”

When Adam sinned the curse of death was brought upon the Earth. Because of this sin God kicked Adam and Eve out of the garden to protect the tree of life which is recorded in Genesis 3:22-24 KJV,

[22] And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

[23] Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

[24] So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Verse 22 in this passage clearly states the man could eat from the tree of life to live forever. So God had to evict man from the Garden of Eden to keep man from eating from the Tree Life which would have resulted in man living forever in a fallen sinful state.

Because of sin everyone must die a physical death. Hebrews 9:27 KJVS teaches us this, it says “…it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”

Romans 6:23 KJVS teaches us that “…the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

So in order to completely defeat sin, death must be defeated. When Jesus rose from the dead he completely defeated sin and death.

His resurrection proved his divinity and his identity as the Son of God. Because he defeated death we will all be raised from the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:50-57 NKJV teaches us:

[50] Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.

[51] Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed

[52] in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

[53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

[54] So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

[55] “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?”

[56] The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.

[57] But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 KJVS, also teaches:

[16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

[17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Jesus defeated death so we will one day rise again and be forever with the Lord. Hallelujah!

We Christians serve a living God who wants a relationship with us. He wants us to be his sons and daughters. God has done the hard part. He sent his son Jesus to die for our sins and rose him from the dead. All we have to do is believe and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

Prayer of Salvation

If you want to begin having a true relationship with God, all you have to do is pray a prayer like this one. Father God, please forgive me of my sins. Thank you that Jesus died for my sins so I can be saved. I believe he was raised from the dead, and I confess him as my lord and savior. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Congratulations on becoming a son or daughter of God. As with any relationship you must spend time developing it by spending time with God through prayer, reading your bible, and just talking to him. I suggest that you find a bible based church where you can learn and grow in faith with other believers. May God bless you!!!

What is Holiness

What Does It Mean to Live a Life?

The subject of holiness is not a popular topic discussed in the church in this day and time for several reasons. Some churches don’t want to talk about it because they are afraid of offending people. Other churches are so steeped in tradition they don’t know the difference between tradition and holiness.

This subject is important to me because my parents took me to a Pentecostal holiness church as a child. I learned a lot of traditions that I thought were holiness. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with tradition, but we need to know the difference between tradition and holiness. When I became an adult, I realized that the traditions I was taught weren’t in the bible. So, in this study, we will explore what the bible really has to say about holiness.

The core scripture for this study is

1 Peter 1:16, KJV, “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”

We as Christians have so many ideas of what living a holy life means. Some people think it means living with just enough to get by, women not wearing pants, makeup, or jewelry, not participating in sports, going to the movies, or listening to secular music. Everyone has their own ideas. Yes, it is true we need to be set apart from the world. The bible teachers us this. The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 12:1-2 KJV,

[1] I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

[2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The Apostle Paul is clearly teaching us in this passage that we are not to live a life conformed to the world. We are not to conform to the way the world thinks or behaves. We are to transform our minds by studying the Word of God.

We Christians call this sanctification. Sanctification and holiness are not the same thing. Sanctification is a result of holiness.

If your not careful you will confuse church traditions for sanctification and sanctification for holiness.

In this study we will see what the bible has to say about holiness. We will discuss the following:

  • God commands us to be holy,
  • Holiness is not following religious traditions or being self-righteous, and
  • Living a Holy life requires you to learn to love God and people.

God Commands Us to Be Holy

First we need to establish that God commands us to be holy. The Apostle Peter teaches us this in 1 Peter 1:14-16 – KJV,

[14] As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

[15] But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

[16] Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”

The Passion Translation gives a clearer understanding of these verses.

1 Peter 1:14-16 TPT
[14] As God’s obedient children, never again shape your lives by the desires that you followed when you didn’t know better.

[15] Instead, shape your lives to become like the Holy One who called you.

[16] For Scripture says: “You are to be holy, because I am holy.”

Hebrews 12:14 KJV also explains the importance of holiness. It states:

[14] Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

KJV Life Application Study Bible explains 1 Peter 1:14-16 as follows:

“1:14-16 The God of Israel and of the Christian church is holy. Because he is perfectly moral, good, and just, without any corruption, he sets the standard for morality. Unlike the Roman gods, he is not violent, adulterous, or spiteful. Unlike the gods of the pagan cults popular in the first century, he is not bloodthirsty or promiscuous. God rules with mercy and justice and cares personally for each of his followers. Our holy God expects us to imitate him by following his high moral standards. Like him, we should be both merciful and just; like him, we should sacrifice ourselves for others.”

The Apostles at that time were writing letters to Churches in the Roman Empire. We know the Romans worshiped many idol gods. The Apostles had to explain to these new Christians that God is holy, just, and moral. They are not to worship or follow the example of the idols they formally worshiped but they are to be holy and follow the example of Jesus.

In verse 16 of 1 Peter 1, we are commanded to be holy because God is holy. This doesn’t mean we have to be perfect. Only God is perfect. It’s impossible for humans to be perfect because of the adamic sin nature passed down to all of us from Adam. But we are all made in the image of God. God put his character in all of us and we are to live in his character.

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior, we become born again. When we become born again God fills us with the gift of his Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit pours even more of God’s character in us. In Galatians 5:22 the Apostle Paul describes it as the fruits of the Spirit.

The passages reads like this in the New Living Translation:

Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
[22] But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

[23] gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

As we grow our relationship with God the more of his character flows through us and the more our lives reflect Jesus.

The KJV Life Application Study Bible explains it like this:

“5:22-23 Newly transformed people produce something special with their lives. Paul calls the new work of the Spirit fruit. The Holy Spirit spontaneously and creatively produces this kind of fruit in us. The Spirit generates these character traits in us because we are becoming more like Jesus, who perfectly modeled them. When Christ controls us, they grow and flow from us naturally. We can’t obtain them by trying to get them without his help. If we want the fruit of the Spirit to grow in us, we must live in close union with Jesus (see John 15:4-5). We must submit to him, know him, love him, remember him, and imitate him. As a result, we will fulfill the intended purpose of the law—to love God and our neighbors.”

The bible clearly teaches us that we are to be holy. Learning to live in God’s character is the key to living a holy life that is pleasing to him.

Holiness is Not Following Religious Traditions or Being Self-Righteous

Holiness is not living a life of legalistic works. Jesus teaches us this in all four Gospels. He always came against the religious leaders of that day. They thought that by keeping the law and all their traditions they added to the law made them holy and right with God. They failed to realize that God wants and requires that we be right with him in our hearts. An example of this can be found in the Gospel of Mark chapter 7. Jesus is confronted by the religious leaders over his disciples not following the traditions of the elders to wash their hands before eating. The passage reads:

Mark 7:1-9 KJV,

[1] Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

[2] And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

[3] For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

[4] And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

[5] Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

[6] He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

[7] Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

[8] For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

[9] And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Jesus goes on to explain in Mark 7:15 KJV,

[15] There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

In other words eating with unclean hands doesn’t defile someone. It’s the person’s words and actions that can defile a person.

The passage clearly illustrates that the religious leaders of the day cared more about their traditions than the Word of God. They even went so far as to teach their traditions as doctorine. Their hearts were not with God to honor and worship him. Their worship was in vain because it was just an outward show to appear holy and pious before men. Jesus uses this parable to warn us not to get caught up in religious traditions thinking by following them they will make us holy and right with God.

Jesus also illustrates in a parable found in Luke 18:9-14 how people think that their own self-righteous makes them holy and right with God. The passage in the Passion Translation reads:

Luke 18:9-14 TPT
[9] Jesus taught this parable to those who were convinced they were morally upright and those who trusted in their own virtue yet looked down on others with disgust:

[10] “Once there were two men who went into the temple to pray. One was a proud religious leader, the other a despised tax collector.

[11-12] The religious leader stood apart from the others and prayed, ‘How I thank you, O God, that I’m not wicked like everyone else. They’re cheaters, swindlers, and crooks-like that tax collector over there. God, you know that I never cheat or commit adultery; I fast from food twice a week and I give you a tenth of all I make.’

[13] “The tax collector stood off alone in the corner, away from the Holy Place, and covered his face in his hands, feeling that he was unworthy to even look up to God. Beating his breast, he sobbed with brokenness and tears saying, ‘God, please, in your mercy and because of the blood sacrifice, forgive me, for I am nothing but the most miserable of all sinners!’

[14] “Which one of them left for home that day made right with God? It was the humble tax collector and not the religious leader! For everyone who praises himself will one day be humiliated before all, and everyone who humbles himself will one day be lifted up and honored before all.”

Jesus strongly warns us in this passage that God does not honor self-righteousness. He honors the humble who sincerely seek him.

God wants us to honor him by honoring his Word in our hearts. When we honor him with our hearts our actions will follow.

Living a Holy Life Requires You to Learn to Love God and People

So how do we learn to live this holy life after we get born again? The first step is to learn to love God which is our first commandment.

Jesus tells us this commandment in Mark 12:30 KJV,

[30] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

When we learn to love God, we naturally want to live to please him just like a child who loves their parents.

Jesus teaches us in John 14:21 KJV,

[21] He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Jesus is clearly saying in this scripture that those who love him obey him.

1 John 5:3 KJV says, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”

We can’t say we love God and do not keep his commandments. As we grow in our relationship with God we lose the desire to live the way we used to live. The Holy Spirit convicts our heart when you are doing something that doesn’t please God.

John 14:26 KJV says, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

We need the Holy Spirit to live a holy life. Everyone who is saved has the Holy Spirit living inside them. He is a gift that will help us live a life pleasing to God. He reminds us of God’s Word and he convicts our heart when we do something not pleasing to God. What a wonderful gift from God!!

The second step to learning to honor God and live a holy life is learning to love people which is the second commandment found in Mark 12:31 KJV. It reads:

[31] And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

We are in the world but we cannot live like the world. The world doesn’t care about the things of God. The world gossips, lies, cheats, disrespects people when they disagree with them. In other words the world doesn’t walk in love or care about living by God’s commandments.

The Apostle Paul teaches us how we should treat each other in Colossians 3:12-17. The Passion Translation gives a clear and beautiful translation of this passage. It says,

[12] You are always and dearly loved by God! So robe yourself with virtues of God, since you have been divinely chosen to be holy. Be merciful as you endeavor to understand others, and be compassionate, showing kindness toward all. Be gentle and humble, unoffendable in your patience with others.

[13] Tolerate the weaknesses of those in the family of faith, forgiving one another in the same way you have been graciously forgiven by Jesus Christ. If you find fault with someone, release this same gift of forgiveness to them.

[14] For love is supreme and must flow through each of these virtues. Love becomes the mark of true maturity.

[15] Let your heart be always guided by the peace of the Anointed One, who called you to peace as part of his one body. And always be thankful.

[16] Let the word of Christ live in you richly, flooding you with all wisdom. Apply the Scriptures as you teach and instruct one another with the Psalms, and with festive praises, and with prophetic songs given to you spontaneously by the Spirit, so sing to God with all your hearts!

[17] Let every activity of your lives and every word that comes from your lips be drenched with the beauty of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One. And bring your constant praise to God the Father because of what Christ has done for you!

Verse 13 of this passage explains the importance of forgiveness. The Apostle John also teaches us the importance of forgiveness in 1 John 4:19-21 KJV,

[19] We love him, because he first loved us.

[20] If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

[21] And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

If we love God we will love people and keep his commandments.

The bible clearly teaches us that holiness is a matter of your heart towards God and a by-product of our relationship with him. Sanctification is a by-product of holiness. Both take time to develop. It is a process learning to renew your mind with the Word of God and learning to allow God change you through his Holy Spirit.

Living a holy life is not about keeping the religious traditions of the Church. As I stated before, there is nothing wrong with traditions. But we can’t confuse them with holiness. Jesus taught us while he was on the Earth that God wants people’s hearts to be right with him. When we get our lives right with God he fills us with his Holy Spirit. Our love for God causes us to seek a deeper relationship with him. As we seek a deeper relationship with him by reading his Word and staying in fellowship with him, his Holy Spirit gives us the power to live a holy life pleasing to him.
